In just one weekend of international release, Sofia Coppola's biopic, "Priscilla," featuring Jacob Elordi as Elvis Presley and Cailee Spaeny as the King's teenage bride, has already marked significant achievements for arthouse streamer and distributor Mubi.
Produced by Fremantle's The Apartment, the film has soared to a box office of over $20 million in the U.S., where A24 premiered it on Oct. 27. For Mubi, this marks its broadest theatrical release ever, spanning more than 1,300 cinemas across the U.K., Ireland, Germany, Latin America, Benelux, and Austria. With an impressive opening weekend box office collection of $4.1 million in these territories, "Priscilla" is poised to break Mubi's records, potentially surpassing Charlotte Wells' indie hit "Aftersun" to become its biggest release to date.
Having grossed over $25 million to date, "Priscilla" is on track to become Coppola's third-largest commercial success and her most significant in almost two decades, following "Lost in Translation" with $117 million and "Marie Antoinette" finishing at $60 million.
The success of "Priscilla" not only solidifies Coppola's position as one of today's most intriguing directors but also propels the rising careers of Jacob Elordi and Cailee Spaeny. The film represents a pivotal moment for Mubi, founded by London-based cinephile Efe Cakarel in 2007.
While Mubi had already earned a reputation as an aggressive arthouse buyer, it managed to make waves with a major multi-territory deal for "Priscilla" before its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where it competed and earned Spaeny the Best Actress award.
Fast forward less than six months from the dazzling Venetian premiere attended by Coppola, Presley, Elordi, and Spaeny (thanks to an interim agreement), and "Priscilla" is now in the awards season race. Spaeny has secured a Golden Globe nomination and is still in contention for a Gotham Award, while Elordi recently received a BAFTA Rising Star nominee nod (with "Priscilla" having two slots in the BAFTA Longlists).
For Mubi, in collaboration with distribution partners worldwide, turning its most significant acquisition into box office gold has been a triumph. Although the company usually keeps its financials discreet, sources reveal that the total box office has surpassed $5 million. Notable figures include a $2 million opening in the U.K. & Ireland, marking the highest debut for a Coppola film. Similarly, in Latin America, where the film earned $1.7 million, it stands as Mubi's most successful venture to date, with Mexico contributing $1.2 million, making "Priscilla" Coppola's best opening in the country. In Germany and Austria, the combined box office approaches $700k, representing Coppola's highest German opening since "Lost in Translation."
