Issa López, the showrunner for "True Detective: Night Country," recently addressed fans on X (formerly Twitter), urging them to counteract toxic trolls attempting to bring down the show's audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite receiving positive reviews from critics, with a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes from 73 reviews, the audience score is currently at 69%, indicating discontent among some viewers.
In her message, López encouraged fans who enjoyed the latest episode to leave positive audience reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. She pointed out that certain fans, particularly those nostalgic for Season 1, seem determined to lower the rating, and she expressed disappointment in the situation despite numerous five-star reviews.
"Review bombing," a practice where fans coordinate to negatively impact the audience score of a film or TV series on platforms like Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb, is a common occurrence. While López didn't specify the exact reasons behind the negative reviews for "True Detective: Night Country," it's not uncommon for productions with women-led casts or inclusive themes to become targets of review bombing, as seen with Marvel's "Captain Marvel" and the 2016 "Ghostbusters" reboot.
"True Detective: Night Country" features two female leads, Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, and revolves around a murder mystery involving an Indigenous Alaskan woman. Despite critical acclaim and being hailed as a rewarding reboot, some one-star audience reviews express dissatisfaction with the show's departure from Nic Pizzolatto's vision, the original showrunner for the first three seasons. Issa López, known for her 2017 horror film "Tigers Are Not Afraid," took over as showrunner for "Night Country," directing and co-writing all six episodes.
